Why Drink Water?

Drinking water may seem like a no brainer to some people but to others it can be a real challenge. I remember when I first started on my fitness journey I would have been lucky to drink one litre of water each day. Now, I average about 3L of water per day.

To start with, I recommend working on building the habit of drinking 2 litres of water every day. This 2L is your core amount. Any water you drink while exercising is on top of your core 2 litres. Now, let’s get into why you should drink a significant amount of water every day!

Water being poured into a glass

Water helps us perform better physically
Our bodies are around 55-60% water and dehydration can have a noticeable effect if you lose as little as 2% of your body's water content! By replenishing our water intake during the day we can stay hydrated and ensure we are performing at our best

Being properly hydrated improves brain function.
Dehydration has a major effect on our brain function. It can affect our mood, concentration and it often leads to headaches!

Drinking Water may help reduce headaches and migraines
In many adults dehydration can cause headaches and migraines. By remaining hydrated you can reduce the risk of this occurring!

Drinking Water can aid with Weight Loss!
Water can cause us to feel fuller and also increases our metabolism. Some studies have shown that drinking half a litre of water can increase your metabolism by up to 30% for up to an hour and a half!

Many Other benefits including:

  • May relieve constipation

  • May prevent kidney stones

  • Helps prevent hangovers!

As you can see, there are tons of reasons why you should drink water every day! Some though, although knowing the benefits of drinking water still struggle to consume enough! Below are my top tips that helped me to drink more water every day!

  1. Get a large water bottle – 1-1.5L bottle. This means you only have to drink 2 bottles a day rather than many small ones. It makes it seem much more manageable.

  2. Try and take 4-5 sips/gulps every time you drink rather than just one. This is especially helpful for then you’re first starting and aren’t thirsty all the time yet!

  3. As soon as your bottle is finished go and fill it up – you want to ensure you always have water on hand!

  4. Add some cucumber, mint, lemon (watch the enamel on your teeth though!) to your water to make it taste better if you don’t like the taste of water.

So there you have it! Why you should drink water and some tips to help you do it! So let’s get drinking!
