Cellulite - Can you get rid of it?

Cellulite is when the skin usually around the bottom and thighs has a dimpled appearance. Many women (does effect some men but it’s less common) feel very self-conscious about their cellulite and strive to do all that they can to get rid of it! What are the facts, can you eliminate Cellulite?

What is Cellulite & What causes it?
Cellulite is the appearance of lumps/dimples around the skin. It can affect both men and women though it is most common in women with 80-90% of women having cellulite.
Cellulite is believed to be caused by fat deposits pushing through the connective tissue in the layer of skin that lies below the surface of the skin. The fat cells pushing through this layer is what is believed to be causing the lumpy/dimpled effect.
Hormones in our body such as estrogen also play a part in the production of cellulite. Estrogen is a hormone that helps keep blood vessels flowing smoothly, if our estrogen levels drop (as they do when we age) then our circulation becomes worse. If our circulation becomes worse it means there is less blood flowing to the connective tissues in our skin meaning the appearance of cellulite can become worse.

Do you just need to lose body fat?
Many people think that cellulite only affects people who are overweight/have a high body fat percentage. This is not true! Cellulite can affect anyone! Yes the appearance of cellulite can be exaggerated when you have more body fat but that doesn’t mean that those people are the only ones affected.

How do you get rid of it?
Simply put, you don’t – there is no proven permanent solution at this time. There are ways you can reduce the appearance of it but unless you go to significant effort such as skin fillers and laser treatments (which may or may not help) chances are you’re not going to get rid of it.

How can you reduce cellulite?
Sorry to say but rubbing a cream on cellulite isn’t going to do anything. I have never seen a study to show that this will work so the “easiest” option is out. Exercise can help reduce the appearance of cellulite. Exercise improves blood flow which is good for cellulite, it also reduces your body fat percentage. By toning your muscles it’ll also give the impression that your cellulite is less noticeable.

You don’t need to get rid of it!
I would like to end this little information session by saying you don’t need to get rid of cellulite. It’s a part of you and to be honest it’s not something you have a huge amount of control over. Cellulite isn’t something that should make you not feel beautiful! If anyone tells you you’re not beautiful because of cellulite then they shouldn’t be in your life! You should embrace your body perceived flaws and all! Our bodies are truly amazing beings and we should be praising our bodies not criticizing them!
